From Social Science to Foreign Service, Alumnus Diversifies a Degree in Education
Teaching has always been the passion of Robert Adelson, which made it a surprising career turn when he became a Foreign Service Officer and U.S. Diplomat at the U.S. Embassy in the United Kingdom. Despite these changes, Adelson is still grateful for his degree from the Social Science Education program at Florida State University.
“My background in education taught me how to have patience, and how to effectively get my point across to another person. Teaching was the toughest job I ever had and it was the perseverance I went through trying to reach my kids every day that serves me well today,” said Adelson.
After Adelson had graduated, he joined Teach for America and taught for two years in the Bronx before a career with the State Department dovetailed into a career as a Foreign Service officer.
“Teaching middle school in the Bronx was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done. There were many times that I wanted to quit, but I have the FSU College of Education to thank for preparing me for the challenges of being an educator.”
Adelson’s favorite program to work on thus far was when he brought fellow Thirty Under 30 recipient, Myron Rolle, to underserved communities in inner-city London where they delivered workshops on juggling sports and academics.
Adelson is grateful for his experiences and says after he retires he wouldn’t mind coming back to FSU to teach leadership or foreign affairs. It is, after all, where he planted his roots for success and received recognition as a Florida State University Thirty Under 30 award winner in 2014.
“It was a tremendous honor to be recognized by the Alumni Association. Just reading the bios of the other 29 that were awarded was humbling. It’s fantastic to see all my old friends and classmates doing big things!”
Get active in a wide variety of things. There are tons of options at FSU: clubs and organizations, SGA, Greek Life, intramurals, Student Boosters, and more. No reason to stick to just one! Your four years at FSU will be some of the best of your life. Make the most of it.
